Exploring the intersection between positive and negative impressions, this course will combine historic and contemporary mold making and printmaking techniques. Translating surface and form into cast-glass printing plates, students will learn the fundamentals of rubber mold making, slumping, fusing, and investment casting alongside vitreography and hand printing. Students will identify the benefits of urethane versus silicone rubbers, and build skills using plaster, wax, and plastic components both open-face and in the round.

Hannah Marie Smith's practice combines performance, photography, tracing, cutting, carving, and casting to explore the intersection of complexity and understanding. Hannah Marie Smith graduated from Plymouth State University, NH with a BFA in Printmaking. Introduced to glass through vitreography, cold working, and kiln forming during an internship at Squam River Studios, NH she has gone on to manage the print shop at Pilchuck Glass School . There she works with Artists in Residence in the production of prints for their permanent collection. She has been an artist in residence at The Holderness School, Grin City Collective, and Pyramid Atlantic Art Center. Her work has been shown throughout New England, including shows at 808 Gallery in Boston, MA. Currently she is exhibiting and teaching workshops nationally.
Understanding of the natural world is limited by our individual capacity for complexity which manifests on scales both observable and structural. It is through this fundamental relationship, between self and environment, that personal experience is formed. Working in the mediums of printmaking, performance, and sculpture, I test our ideas of limitation, infinity, and endurance in order to gaining knowledge of our reality, and relation to it.
Utilizing visual media and varied forms of replication, repetition, and reduction, allows for my work to speak directly to our processes of recognition, observation, and internalization; each being integral components of understanding. Subsequently action and environments are recorded creating surfaces. Surfaces which serve as markers of time and effort, indicators of labor. By investigating our environments cycles and resiliency, the work contributes to a wider conversation on human behavior, development, and control.
